Initial Problem - Customer drove vehicle in with codes P0335 and complaints of difficulty in starting vehicle after warm.

Diagnosis & Recommendation - Based on Kia documents, the P0335 code points to the crankshaft position sensor. We were able to confirm that the PCM was receiving the Crank signal at the time the vehicle was here which likely indicates it's an intermittent fault. We advised the customer that the front timing cover has to be completely removed in order to access the crank position sensor. It does not pay to only replace the sensor and the customer should strongly consider replace the crankshaft position sensor considering the mileage of the vehicle and the work involved. If the timing belt were to break within the next year, you would be paying twice for the same labor.

Outcome - The customer agreed that performing the "while you are in there" services makes financial sense. We replaced all the camshaft seals, crankshaft seal, crankshaft position sensor, timing belt, timing belt tensioner, timing belt roller, timing cover seals as well as crankshaft gear with crankshaft blade. The crankshaft gear was not always a common part to replace. However experience has shown us that the crankshaft blade (which was attached to the crankshaft gear in this case) will break. When the crankshaft blade breaks it can cause the P0335 or other crankshaft position sensor related codes. We have learned to pass on this experience to our customers to prevent them for double paying for labor along with losing time and money by breaking down on the road.
