Initial Problem - Timing cover had a small hole on the driver side. It initially led to a noisier engine that eventually started to leak oil.
Diagnosis & Recommendation - In this scenario, the obvious fix is to replace the timing cover. However, at Joman Auto Service we like to look at the whole picture to resolve potential issues that can show up in the near future. After speaking to the customer we knew that the customer wanted to hold onto the vehicle for a longer period of time. They were not interested in repairing a short term issue while ignoring long term inevitable timing problems that will occur when age and mileage start to catch up to a vehicle. We concluded with the customer that it was in their best interest to replace the entire timing assembly. We ordered and replaced timing gears, cam phasers, timing chains, crankshaft sprocket, timing chain guides, timing chain cover, and the water pump.
Outcome - Once complete we ran the vehicle as we normally would to make sure everything is operating as it should. We were amazed at how quiet the engine had now become. Ford 5.4 liter engines are notorious for a "ticking' sound that plagues higher mileage engines; however this engine was so quiet that all you heard was the fuel injectors working over the actual engine noise. The end result was an extremely happy customer who is counting on his vehicle for years to come.
